CASE STUDY
Project overview
FFTS VR is designed to assess how firefighters respond during an emergency scenario. Gamelance restructured an existing single-player VR prototype into a multiplayer training simulation, with VR trainees connected to a non-VR instructor host on Windows. Client testing used Meta Quest 3 headsets for PC VR.
The engineering work combined a custom material-dependent fire propagation system with temperature, extinguishment and dynamic smoke behavior, synchronized across players. Trainees operate a two-handed VR hose and nozzle, control water pressure and tackle fires while the system records response times, extinguishment milestones and effective versus wasted water use.
Instructors can configure scenarios, place fires, monitor players through spectator cameras and a map, and review movement heat maps and performance reports. Rather than recording headset video, Gamelance built a gameplay-data replay system that reconstructs player and simulation state, allowing free-roam review and timeline navigation. PDF reports and automated email delivery complete the assessment workflow.
The completed phase was tested and accepted by the client. In final client testing, six connected clients completed a 30-minute scenario with multiple active fires, stable server operation, smooth replay playback and near-instant timeline seeking. Report emails were subsequently confirmed working for all six clients in both the packaged build and editor. Delivery included Windows builds, the full Unreal Engine source project and technical walkthroughs.
